Bio
Recruited from Richmond District, Jack "Dodger" Evans was a consistent defender for Melbourne who became better known for his heroism off the field than his exploits on it. He established himself as a regular in the backline between 1912 and 1915, playing a key role in the club's defence before his career was abruptly interrupted by the outbreak of World War I. Enlisting in the AIF, Evans served with distinction on the Western Front, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in 1918 despite sustaining serious wounds. Remarkably, he recovered sufficiently to return to the Melbourne lineup for a final season in 1919, adding a further chapter to a career defined by resilience and duty.
