Bio
Recruited from the Hawthorn reserves, Jack Arnott was a powerfully built full-forward whose move to Victoria Park was driven by a lifelong friendship with Magpie legend Lou Richards. The pair had grown up playing cricket and football together in the local streets, and Arnott eventually joined his best mate in the black and white for the 1942 season. A tall target with strong hands and a lovely kick, he proved to be a prolific scorer at the lower level, booting a massive 51 goals in just nine reserves games during 1943 to finish runner-up in the seconds' best-and-fairest. Arnott appeared poised to cement a permanent spot in the senior side, with newspapers of the day describing him as an "ideal full-forward," but his VFL career was cruelly cut short by serious illness. He eventually recovered to captain-coach Abbotsford and Prahran in the VFA, leaving the Magpie army to wonder what might have been had he remained healthy during his prime.
