Bio
The son of former University player Ernie Atkins, Jack Atkins joined the Demons after a standout amateur career with Old Melburnians, where he claimed the 1939 A Grade Best and Fairest. A versatile big man capable of playing in the ruck or holding down a key defensive post, he made his VFL debut as a late replacement for injured full-back Bill Baxter early in the 1940 season. Atkins managed four senior appearances that year before his promising football journey was cut short by his enlistment in the Royal Australian Navy. Tragically, he became one of the league's fallen heroes in 1942 when he was killed in action aboard the HMAS Perth during the Battle of Sunda Strait.
