Bio
Recruited from Footscray in the VFA, John "Jerry" Borthwick was a local product who briefly crossed over to the League to try his luck with the "Same Olds." Despite showing promise in the Association, he found opportunities scarce in Essendon's competitive 1906 lineup, managing just two senior appearances in a season where the club finished as finalists. Unable to secure a permanent spot in the VFL side, he subsequently returned to Footscray, where he re-established himself as a stalwart of the club, eventually compiling 80 games and becoming a reliable fixture for the Tricolours until 1912.
