Recruited from local side Ascot Vale, Jack "Jules" Caesar wasted little time establishing himself at Windy Hill, winning the club's Best First Year Player award in 1938. A pacey and relentless wingman known for his beautiful delivery of the ball, he became a central figure in the Bombers' midfield, earning the Most Consistent Player award and polling the most Brownlow votes for the club in 1940. His VFL career peaked in 1942 when he played a crucial role in Essendon's premiership triumph, redeeming the side's Grand Final loss from the previous season. However, his time at the top level was cut short by World War II; Caesar departed to serve as a sapper in the Pacific Islands immediately following the flag win, eventually concluding his football days with Yarraville in the VFA upon his return.
