Bio
A decorated interstate recruit, Jack Cockburn arrived at Windy Hill not as a rookie, but as a bona fide star of the SANFL. Already a Magarey Medalist and dual premiership player with South Adelaide, Cockburn was stationed in Melbourne with the RAAF during World War II, allowing him to join the Bombers on a wartime permit. Although military service restricted his training and limited him to just 10 VFL appearances, his class was evident as he slotted directly into a half-back flank role for Essendon's 1943 Grand Final side. He briefly transferred to Williamstown to capture a VFA flag in 1945 before returning to South Australia, where he is now immortalised as a state Hall of Fame inductee.
