Already a seasoned veteran when the breakaway league launched in 1897, he was entrusted with leading the club during its transition from the VFA, captaining the side for its first three seasons. A durable key position player who served as a defensive anchor, Conway played 51 games without registering a goal, focusing instead on structural stability and on-field leadership. He steered the team to the minor premiership in the competition’s debut year, cementing his legacy as a foundational pillar of the Geelong Football Club.
