Recruited from VFA club Prahran, Jack Dowding arrived at the Junction Oval in 1903 and quickly established himself as a versatile follower and forward. Standing 182cm—a significant height for the era—he used his size to compete in the air while maintaining the mobility to drift forward and hit the scoreboard. His standout performance came during his debut season against Melbourne at the MCG, where he booted a career-high five goals to spearhead a memorable victory. Despite being a consistent selection for the Saints over three years, Dowding opted to return to the VFA in 1906, where he proved his durability by playing well into his late thirties with Prahran and Brighton.
