Recruited directly from Coburg High School, Jack Ellis was a rangy forward who made an immediate impact upon his arrival at Princes Park in 1955. The slender attacker—standing 183cm but weighing just 69kg—relied on his agility and leading patterns rather than physical bulk, a trait that served him well when he booted three goals on debut in the opening round of the season. Despite boasting an impressive strike rate of 13 goals from his 10 senior appearances, Ellis found opportunities limited in a powerful Carlton forward line spearheaded by the prolific Noel O'Brien and captain Ken Hands. He remained a handy depth option, notably kicking six goals in just three games during the 1956 season, but struggled to cement a permanent spot in the senior side and departed the club following a solitary appearance in 1957.
