Recruited from the wonderfully named Williamstown Fire Brigade football team, Jack Ferguson was a mature-age arrival who broke into the VFL at 24 years of age. He joined South Melbourne in 1926 and spent three seasons at the Lake Oval, primarily operating as a rotational forward and flanker who could drift into attack to hit the scoreboard. While he never fully cemented a permanent spot in the starting eighteen, Ferguson proved to be a capable depth player, managing 20 senior games and six goals before his career concluded at the end of the 1928 season.
