Jack Fitzpatrick was an athletic key forward and backup ruckman whose potential was often curtailed by significant health setbacks, including chronic fatigue syndrome and concussion issues. Selected by Melbourne with pick 50 in the 2009 National Draft, he offered rare speed and agility for a player of his height, yet he found it difficult to maintain continuity in the senior lineup during a difficult era for the club. His standout moment in red and blue came in 2015 against Fremantle, where he kicked a dashing running goal from outside 50 to seal an upset victory at the MCG. Seeking a fresh start, Fitzpatrick crossed to Hawthorn via trade ahead of the 2016 season to provide ruck depth, but his time at Waverley Park was limited to just four appearances. After suffering a significant head knock, he announced his retirement in 2017 on medical advice, concluding a career defined by resilience in the face of persistent physical challenges.
