Bio
Recruited from Glen Iris, Jack Furniss established himself as a reliable follower for Melbourne in the late 1930s, playing a key role in the club’s 1939 premiership victory. His hopes for back-to-back flags were dashed the following year when injury ruled him out of the 1940 Grand Final side after he had featured in the Preliminary Final win. Furniss’s prime football years were subsequently consumed by World War II service with the RAAF, though he maintained his form by dominating the Canberra league, where he won the 1941 Mulrooney Medal while playing for Fairbairn. After a seven-year absence from VFL level, he returned to the Demons in 1947 primarily to captain the reserves, managing two final senior appearances before hanging up his boots.
