Bio
Hailing from Kerang, Jack Garden made his debut for Essendon in 1915, but his football journey was swiftly interrupted by the First World War. He sacrificed four prime years of his career to military service, not returning to the VFL until the 1920 season. His comeback was immediate and impactful; rather than showing signs of rust, he claimed the club's Best and Fairest award in his first year back, instantly securing his place in the senior lineup and proving he had lost none of his ability during the hiatus.
A diminutive but skillful wingman, Garden stood just 170cm and fit perfectly into the mould of the famous "Mosquito Fleet" that defined Essendon's 1920s dominance. He represented Victoria in 1921 and became a dual premiership player, featuring prominently in the Bombers' back-to-back flags in 1923 and 1924. He remained a consistent performer on the wing until his retirement in 1926, leaving the game as a highly respected club champion who maximized his time on the field despite the years lost to global conflict.
