Recruited from St Kilda Juniors, Jack Gill was a foundational player for Hawthorn who bridged the club's transition from the VFA to the VFL. A diminutive wingman standing just 171cm, he established himself in the side during the club's final VFA campaigns before earning his place in history as a member of the Mayblooms' inaugural VFL team in Round 1, 1925. Gill remained a consistent selection during those difficult early years in the senior competition, playing 40 games across four seasons while the club struggled to find its footing against established powerhouses. He retired from league football at the end of 1928 to pursue a career as a stockbroker.
