Bio
Recruited from Northcote, Jack Hammond entered the VFL as part of a prominent footballing family that included his younger brothers, Collingwood’s Billy and Carlton legend Charlie. He joined Charlie at Princes Park in 1906 but found it difficult to cement a spot in a Blues outfit destined for the premiership, managing just two senior games in their historic campaign. A capable forward who maintained a strong goal-kicking strike rate, Hammond crossed to Melbourne the following season in search of greater opportunities. However, his career was brought to a premature and unfortunate end during a 1908 pre-season practice match against Hawthorn, where he suffered a severe leg fracture that forced him into immediate retirement.
