Bio
A Geelong native who took a circuitous route to the league, Jack Hassett established himself as a premier follower with South Melbourne after a brief apprenticeship with Port Melbourne in the VFA. He rose to the captaincy at Lake Oval but was sensationally sacked following the 1905 season due to disciplinary issues arising from a club trip to Sydney. Hassett spent the subsequent year in exile captaining North Broken Hill, where his dominance in representative fixtures caught the eye of recruiters back home. Cleared to join Geelong in 1907, he immediately assumed the captaincy and impressed the Pivotonians with his dash, agility, and long kicking. He led the side for two seasons before a severe ankle injury forced his premature retirement in 1909.
