Bio
Hailing from the rugby league heartland of Newtown, Jack Hayes was a rare New South Wales native who ventured south to test himself in the Victorian Football League. Recruited from the South Sydney Australian Football Club, he arrived at the Western Oval for the 1931 season and brought a robust 181cm frame to the contest. Hayes quickly earned a spot in the senior lineup, operating primarily as a forward-half utility where he contributed seven goals across 13 matches. Despite establishing himself as a regular starter that year, his stint in the VFL was fleeting; he obtained a clearance back to Sydney prior to the 1932 season to join St George, concluding a brief but unique interlude as a Sydney-born player in the Victorian competition before later serving in World War II.
