Recruited from South Yarra, Jack Howe was a diminutive rover who made his debut for St Kilda during the wartime season of 1944. Standing just 168cm, he compensated for his lack of size with a sharp eye for the goals, proving to be a dangerous option when resting forward. In an era where the Saints often struggled to post winning scores, Howe was a notably efficient contributor, booting 30 goals in his brief 23-game VFL career—a strike rate that bettered many specialist forwards of the time. Despite his potent goal sense, he was unable to secure a long-term position at the Junction Oval and departed the club following the 1947 season. He subsequently crossed to the VFA, where he became a stalwart for Brighton, playing over 100 games and continuing his prolific scoring form with 148 goals in the Association.
