Bio
Recruited from local feeder club Essendon Stars, Jack Knowles progressed through the Bombers' Under 19s premiership system before taking a brief detour to play for Redan in the Ballarat Football League. He returned to Windy Hill in 1952 to commence his VFL career, quickly establishing himself as a stoic custodian in the key defensive posts. A disciplined full-back who never kicked a goal in his 78-game career, Knowles was tasked with shutting down opposition spearheads rather than providing attacking flair. His tenure was highlighted by an appearance in the 1957 Grand Final, where he manned the last line of defence in the loss to a powerhouse Melbourne side. He remained a regular fixture in the senior lineup until his retirement midway through the 1958 season.
