Teams

Born Jack Melville Francis in Carlton, Jack McGarity was a wartime recruit who made a brief cameo for Essendon during the final stages of the Great War. Adopting his stepfather's surname, the 180cm prospect brought valuable height to the "Same Olds" lineup at a time when team lists were heavily impacted by military enlistments. He broke into the senior side midway through the 1918 season, managing just two appearances before his time at the elite level concluded. McGarity eventually left the Victorian football landscape entirely, spending his later years in New South Wales.
