Family

Recruited from North Geelong, Jack Metherell developed into a formidable full-forward for the Cats, utilizing his strength and accurate boot to lead the club's goalkicking in four of his six seasons. A prolific scorer who averaged better than three goals a game, he played a pivotal role in Geelong's 1937 campaign with a career-high 84 majors, yet his time in the VFL ended on a sour note when he was suspended for striking Collingwood's Jack Ross in the Preliminary Final. The four-week ban forced him to watch from the sidelines as his teammates won the Premiership, and rather than serve the remainder of the penalty in Victoria the following year, he crossed the Nullarbor to join WAFL club Subiaco.
