Recruited from Bulleen-Templestowe in the VAFA, Jack Newton was a tall, lightly framed forward who made a startlingly productive impact during his brief VFL career. Standing 188cm but weighing just 76kg, he burst onto the scene as a teenager in 1971, seemingly scoring at will to finish his debut season with 30 goals from just 10 games. Wearing the number 27 guernsey, he proved a difficult matchup for opposition defences, averaging three goals an outing and looking every bit a long-term prospect for the Lions. However, he was unable to maintain that trajectory, missing the entire 1972 season and managing only two final appearances in 1973 before departing the league. While his tenure was short, Newton remains a statistical curiosity for Fitzroy fans due to his exceptional strike rate in front of goal.
