A graduate of the Brisbane Lions Academy via the Sunshine Coast, Jack Payne famously gave up a promising future in discus to pursue an AFL career. His athletics background provided the foundation for his explosive closing speed and strength in one-on-one contests, traits that eventually saw him break into a settled Brisbane backline after battling early injuries. While his breakout 2023 season ended in the heartbreak of missing the Grand Final through injury, Payne secured his redemption the following year as a key member of the 2024 premiership team. Now firmly established as Harris Andrews' partner in defence, he is renowned for his ability to quell opposing key forwards while peeling off to take confident intercept marks.
