Recruited from country Victoria, Jack Pemberton arrived at Punt Road with a reputation for blistering speed, having previously triumphed in the prestigious Colac Gift. A medium-sized utility capable of playing off a half-back flank or through the midfield, he was a member of Richmond’s inaugural VFL squad in 1908 but struggled to translate his athletics background into a consistent senior role. After just three winless appearances for the Tigers, he transferred to the VFA, where he became a staple for North Melbourne over several seasons. Pemberton remains a unique historical footnote for his later return to the VFL as North Melbourne's caretaker coach in 1931, retiring from the top level with the unfortunate distinction of never tasting victory as either a player or a coach.
