Teams

Recruited from Maryborough in the Bendigo Football League, Jack Ryan made an immediate impact at the Western Oval by topping Footscray’s goalkicking in his debut 1935 season—a notable achievement for a player who primarily operated as a wingman. He quickly established himself as a consistent fixture in the Bulldogs' midfield, impressing enough with his ball use and scoreboard impact to earn selection for the VFL representative side against the VFA in just his second year. After five dedicated seasons with the Bulldogs, Ryan was part of a direct player swap in 1940, crossing to North Melbourne in exchange for Ted Ellis. He played out the final two years of his VFL career at Arden Street, remembered as a dependable and goal-savvy wingman who transitioned seamlessly between club and representative duties.
