Bio
Born in Violet Town, Jack Sambell arrived at Melbourne in 1933 with a strong country football pedigree, having previously starred for Yallourn where he won a premiership and Best and Fairest in the Gippsland Football League. A school teacher by trade, his transfer to the city by the Education Department facilitated his entry into the VFL, where he quickly established himself as a versatile midfielder and half-forward. He played 24 senior games over two seasons wearing the number 4 guernsey, but his momentum was halted by a serious shoulder injury sustained during the 1935 pre-season. Despite the setback costing him his spot in the senior side, Sambell remained a dedicated clubman, recovering to play a key role in the Demons' 1935 Reserves premiership victory before later continuing his football journey with Camberwell in the VFA.
