Recruited from Eaglehawk in the Bendigo Football League, Jack Slattery was a capable forward who played a pivotal role during Footscray's memorable 1961 finals campaign. An athletic target who also held country records in the javelin, Slattery stood 183cm and could operate as a third tall or a key position option. His defining moment came in the 1961 Preliminary Final against Melbourne, where he booted a vital four goals to propel the Bulldogs into the Grand Final. He lined up at full-forward in the decider against Hawthorn but was held goalless as the team went down by 43 points. Although his VFL career spanned just 32 games, Slattery remains a noted figure for his contribution to that premiership push and was later named in Eaglehawk's Team of the Century.
