Bio
Hailing from Stratford in Victoria’s Gippsland region, Jack Somerville was a diminutive rover and small forward who briefly tried his hand at VFL level during the early 1930s. Standing just 171cm, he made his debut for Footscray in the opening round of the 1933 season against Essendon, quickly following up with his solitary career goal in a comfortable win over Hawthorn the following week. Despite this encouraging start, Somerville struggled to maintain his place in the senior side, spending long periods out of the team before enjoying a more consistent run of matches in the first half of 1934. He made his final appearance against Carlton in Round 10 that year, eventually departing the Western Oval after just 10 senior games to return to country life, leaving a legacy as one of the many regional recruits who stepped up to the highest level before fading from the VFL scene.
