Bio
Born in Helensburgh, Scotland, Jack Strong was a distinctive recruit for Melbourne at the turn of the century, entering the VFL directly from Melbourne Grammar School where he had captained the First XVIII. Debuting as a 17-year-old in 1901, he established himself as a sturdy ruckman and forward who used his frame to contest possession and drift forward to hit the scoreboard. Despite a stop-start tenure that saw him miss the entire 1902 and 1911 seasons, Strong remained a loyal servant to the Redlegs for over a decade. He provided stability and physical presence during a lean era for the club, eventually hanging up the boots after the 1912 season to pursue a successful commercial career.
