Recruited from Northcote Juniors, Jack Trehey commenced his VFL journey at Fitzroy, making a single senior appearance during the 1902 season. He transferred to Essendon the following year seeking more consistent opportunities, where he managed to break into the side for six matches and kicked his only career goal.
