Bio
Arriving from South Melbourne College, Jack West initially broke into the VFL ranks with Melbourne, but it was his move to University for their inaugural 1908 season that defined his footballing life. A tireless follower capable of impacting contests around the ground, West became a permanent fixture in the Students' lineup and a rare constant during the club's short existence in the league. His leadership qualities were formally recognised when he was appointed captain for the 1914 season, steering the amateur side through what ultimately proved to be its final year in the competition. West's career was brought to a premature halt by the outbreak of World War I, where he served at Gallipoli and sustained wounds that precluded any return to the field after his repatriation.
