Bio
Recruited from local ranks after attending Geelong College, Jack Wighton was a versatile sportsman described as a capable all-round athlete. He managed just two senior appearances for Geelong during the 1906 VFL season before his elite football career faded, but his name remains etched in history for his heroism off the field. A marine engineer by trade, Wighton was working aboard the steamer Wyrallah in 1924 when it collided with another vessel in The Rip at Port Phillip Heads. Tragically, he was one of six men to perish in the disaster, reportedly losing his life after returning below deck in a selfless attempt to rescue the ship's firemen as the vessel sank.
