Teams

Recruited from South Fremantle with pick 10 in the 2004 Pre-Season Draft, Jacob Surjan carved out a reputation as a courageous and disciplined small defender at Port Adelaide. While he initially found it difficult to break into the senior side during the club's premiership success in his debut season, he cemented his place by 2006, becoming a key component of the Power's backline during their run to the 2007 Grand Final. Surjan was best known for his defensive accountability, desperate smothering, and willingness to put his body on the line to quell dangerous small forwards, traits that eventually saw him elevated to the club's vice-captaincy in 2010.

Despite his standing as a spiritual leader within the playing group, Surjan's later career was severely hampered by persistent hip and knee injuries that restricted his ability to train and play at full intensity. After a standout 2009 campaign where he was arguably at his peak, his body began to fail him, limiting him to just 13 appearances across his final two seasons. He was delisted at the conclusion of 2012 but remained a highly respected figure at Alberton, immediately transitioning into a development coaching role and captaining the club's SANFL magpies before pursuing further coaching opportunities within the AFL system.
