Bio
Recruited from Leeton-Whitton as a NSW zone concession, Jacob Townsend began his career as a foundation player for Greater Western Sydney, establishing an early reputation as a ferocious tackler and defensive midfielder. After struggling to find consistent senior opportunities in the Giants' deepening midfield, he was traded to Richmond ahead of the 2016 season, where he initially battled on the fringe of selection. His career defined itself in late 2017 when, after winning the VFL's J.J. Liston Trophy, he was recalled to the senior side as a defensive forward and made an immediate impact, kicking 11 goals in two weeks and holding his spot for the Tigers' drought-breaking premiership. Despite this high point, Townsend found himself squeezed out of Richmond's lineup in subsequent years, leading to short, one-season stints at Essendon and Gold Coast as a delisted free agent. A combative player whose physical aggression often outweighed his polish, Townsend retired as a four-club journeyman best remembered for his pivotal late-season cameo in Richmond's 2017 flag run.
