Drafted by Essendon with pick 24 in the 2009 National Draft, Jake Carlisle established himself as a talented key position utility capable of dominating in the air at both ends of the ground. Initially developed as a defender, his sticky hands and contested marking strength saw him swung forward with significant effect during the 2013 and 2014 seasons, where he proved to be a match-winner in several marquee fixtures. His time at Tullamarine ended under difficult circumstances, and seeking a fresh start, he requested a trade to St Kilda at the end of 2015. However, his career at Moorabbin stalled immediately as he was forced to sit out the entire 2016 season due to a suspension arising from the Essendon supplements saga.

Upon his return in 2017, Carlisle settled permanently into the backline, serving as the anchor of the Saints' defence. An elite intercept mark with an excellent ability to read the flight of the ball, he was routinely tasked with nullifying the opposition's best tall forward while peeling off to support teammates. Despite his structural importance to St Kilda, his later years were heavily impacted by persistent back injuries that limited his continuity and training loads. He departed the AFL at the conclusion of the 2021 season, remembered as a gifted swingman whose career was defined by his aerial dominance, though ultimately curtailed by interruption and injury.
