Bio
Recruited from Glenelg with pick 46 in the 1999 National Draft, James Byrne was a prolific ball-winning midfielder who arrived at Adelaide as a mature-age prospect ready for senior football. He played 24 games over two seasons, showing flashes of his ability to accumulate possessions and drive the ball through the centre, but he ultimately struggled to secure a long-term contract in a competitive Crows engine room and was delisted at the end of 2001. While his time at the elite level was brief, Byrne subsequently carved out a distinguished career in the VFL, most notably as the inaugural captain of the Geelong Cats' standalone VFL side where he won the 2007 J.J. Liston Trophy as the competition's best and fairest player.
