Bio
Originally recruited from South Fremantle, James Clement began his AFL career with the Dockers in their formative years, primarily utilised as a forward and occasional midfielder. While he showed promise during his five seasons in the west, he often struggled to find a settled position within the line-up. His career trajectory changed dramatically after being traded to Collingwood at the end of the 2000 season, a move that reunited him with coach Mick Malthouse, who immediately reinvented Clement as a defender.
At Collingwood, Clement established himself as one of the league's premier backmen, renowned for his composure, physical strength, and ability to read the play. He became the cornerstone of the Magpies' defence during their Grand Final runs in 2002 and 2003, rarely beaten in one-on-one contests while providing crucial rebound from the back half. His consistent excellence was recognised with two Copeland Trophies and dual All-Australian selection. A respected vice-captain, Clement remained an elite performer until his unexpected retirement following the 2007 season to support his family during his wife's battle with a serious illness.
