Bio
Recruited from Werribee alongside his identical twin brother Chris, James Gowans joined St Kilda via the 1999 Rookie Draft as a tenacious small forward and midfielder. He broke into the senior side late in the season for a four-game cameo, booting two goals and displaying the ferocious attack on the footy that would later become his trademark, but was delisted at the end of the year without securing a senior list upgrade. While his AFL career was brief, his subsequent move to Central District in the SANFL launched a dynasty; Gowans became a relentless ball-winner and big-game specialist for the Bulldogs. He famously won the Jack Oatey Medal in the club's breakthrough 2000 premiership and went on to play in nine flags, retiring as a South Australian football icon who proved that elite talent doesn't always reside solely on AFL lists.
