Bio
Plucked from Noble Park in the Eastern Football League, James Gwilt was a surprise selection by St Kilda with pick 63 in the 2004 National Draft, having bypassed the traditional TAC Cup pathway. Initially used as a utility capable of drifting forward, the left-footer eventually established himself as a composed medium defender under Ross Lyon. Known for his reliable kicking and ability to play on opponents taller than himself, Gwilt became a fixture in the Saints' backline during their dominant era, playing in all three Grand Finals across the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
His career momentum stalled in 2011 following a season-ending knee reconstruction, but he returned to play regular senior football until the Saints delisted him at the end of 2014 as part of a list regeneration strategy. Gwilt was subsequently offered a lifeline by Essendon as a delisted free agent to add defensive depth and experience to their squad. He played a further 26 games over two seasons for the Bombers, serving as a steady hand in the back half before concluding his 152-game career in 2016 as a respected professional who carved out a decade-long tenure despite an unconventional entry into the elite system.
