Bio
Recruited from the Geelong Falcons with pick 29 in the 1997 National Draft, James Rahilly made an immediate impression at Kardinia Park by winning the club's Best First Year Player award in 1998. A disciplined small defender who later transitioned into a run-with role, Rahilly was valued for his work ethic and defensive accountability rather than offensive flair, often tasked with nullifying dangerous opposition small forwards. Despite his promising start, he battled to secure a permanent position in the senior side during the early 2000s as the Cats began to assemble the core of their future premiership dynasty. He remained a one-club player until being delisted at the conclusion of the 2005 season, narrowly missing out on the club's era of dominance. Following his playing days, Rahilly forged a respected career in coaching, serving a long tenure as an assistant and VFL coach at Geelong before a stint with the Adelaide Crows, eventually returning to the Cats to oversee the forward line.
