Bio
The son of former Collingwood and Richmond ruckman Craig Stewart, James Stewart was overlooked as a father-son prospect before being selected by Greater Western Sydney with pick 27 in the 2012 National Draft. Finding opportunities scarce behind a formidable Giants forward line that included Jeremy Cameron and Jonathon Patton, the key position player requested a trade to Essendon ahead of the 2017 season in search of regular senior football. Initially making his mark at Tullamarine as a strong-marking forward who provided a structural foil for Joe Daniher, Stewart battled persistent groin injuries that sidelined him for nearly two full seasons before reinventing himself as a key defender to fill structural gaps. Despite displaying utility as a swingman capable of intercepting across half-back, his tenure at the Bombers was ultimately defined by fitness battles, leading to his delisting at the conclusion of the 2023 season.
