Bio
Recruited from North Adelaide with pick 29 in the 2002 National Draft, Jared Rivers announced himself as a future star by winning the Rising Star award in 2004. He quickly established himself as a courageous intercept marking defender who read the play exceptionally well, often acting as the general of the Demons' backline. Despite his obvious talent and eventual elevation to the leadership group, his tenure at Melbourne was frequently interrupted by frustrating injuries, preventing him from stringing together consistent seasons during a turbulent era for the club.
Seeking a fresh start and the chance for on-field success, Rivers exercised his rights during the AFL's inaugural free agency period to join Geelong ahead of the 2013 season. He arrived with the difficult task of helping cover the loss of legendary full-back Matthew Scarlett, and while he proved a steady contributor who featured in consecutive finals campaigns, his degenerative knee issues eventually took their toll. He retired midway through the 2015 season, widely respected as a smart and brave defender who extracted the maximum from his body despite significant physical setbacks.
