Jason Castagna

Recruited by Richmond with pick 29 in the 2014 Rookie Draft, Jason Castagna began his career on the fringes of the senior side, initially training as a rebounding defender. It was a permanent move to the forward line in 2017 that transformed his trajectory, seeing him become a key component of the Tigers' distinct small forward setup. Castagna played a high-octane brand of football predicated on elite speed and defensive pressure, often tasked with harassing opposition defenders to create turnovers. While his finishing skills and ball use were occasionally erratic—earning him a reputation as a chaos player rather than a clinical one—his work rate without the ball made him invaluable to the club's tactical system.

Castagna became a three-time premiership player during Richmond's golden era, featuring in the 2017, 2019, and 2020 flag-winning sides. He proved remarkably durable during this period, rarely missing a game and consistently ranking high for pressure acts inside 50. Despite his success, he faced ongoing scrutiny regarding his consistency in front of goal and fought to hold his place in the side as the list evolved following the 2020 triumph. In February 2023, just prior to the start of the season, Castagna abruptly announced his immediate retirement from AFL football, stating he had lost his passion for the game, finishing his time at Punt Road as a highly decorated one-club player.
