Recruited from the Calder Cannons with pick 28 in the 1996 National Draft, Jason Johnson established himself as the engine room of the Essendon midfield during one of the club's most dominant eras. A courageous, contested ball-winner with elite endurance, he performed the heavy lifting that allowed teammates to shine on the outside. After cementing his spot in the senior lineup, he played a vital role in the historic 2000 premiership side, but his individual peak arrived the following season. In 2001, Johnson claimed the Crichton Medal as the club's best and fairest and earned All-Australian selection, underscoring his value in a team laden with superstars like James Hird and Matthew Lloyd.

Johnson remained a stalwart for the Bombers throughout the mid-2000s, providing veteran leadership and physical presence during a difficult transition period for the club. While his uncompromising attack on the football made him a fan favourite, the physical toll of his playstyle eventually caught up with him. Hampered by persistent injuries in his final years, he retired at the end of the 2008 season. He departed as a distinguished one-club player and Life Member, remembered not for flashiness, but for his relentless work ethic and reliability in the contest.
