Drafted by Richmond with pick 12 in the 2002 National Draft, Jay Schulz arrived at Punt Road from Woodville-West Torrens as a highly touted key position prospect. However, his seven seasons with the Tigers were defined by frustration, as he battled injuries and inconsistent form while being shuffled between forward and defensive roles. Unable to cement a permanent spot in the senior side, he was traded to Port Adelaide at the end of 2009 in exchange for Mitch Farmer—a move that would ultimately revitalise his career and provide the fresh start he desperately needed.

At Alberton, Schulz transformed into one of the most reliable and courageous forwards in the competition. Renowned for his dead-eye set shot routine and willingness to put his body on the line in marking contests, he became the focal point of the Power’s attack during both their lean years and their resurgence under Ken Hinkley. He topped the club’s goalkicking four times (2010, 2012, 2013, 2014) and finished second in the Coleman Medal in 2014 with a career-best 66 goals. Schulz retired in 2016 as a fan favourite, celebrated not just for his scoring prowess but for his fearless attack on the ball and disregard for his own safety.
