Bio
Recruited from Healesville in the Yarra Valley, Jeff Bates arrived at Kardinia Park with significant fanfare ahead of the 1969 season. Standing 180cm, he was the subject of early media hype, with The Age even running a preseason feature regarding the recruit titled "Is he headed for fame?". Despite the anticipation, Bates found it difficult to secure a regular spot in a strong Geelong lineup that was consistently pushing for finals under coach Peter Pianto. A mid-sized utility who struggled to translate his country form to the VFL standard, he managed just six senior appearances and a single goal over three seasons before departing the club at the end of 1971.
