Recruited from Carey Grammar where he served as school captain, Jeff Chapman arrived at Melbourne via an unusual pathway, having originally been courted by Hawthorn before switching to the Demons to join friends at the club. He forced his way into senior selection as an 18-year-old after booting seven goals in a preseason practice match, a performance that saw him handed the daunting responsibility of starting at full-forward for the opening round of the 1966 season. A strongly built key position prospect, Chapman kicked a goal on debut but played just one further game before losing his spot in the side. He returned to school football for the remainder of the year and later spent time in the Hawthorn reserves, eventually trading his football career for a highly successful path in business and philanthropy.
