Bio
Recruited from Reservoir, Jeff Clifton established himself as a stoic full-back during a competitive era for Collingwood. A traditional last-line defender, Clifton possessed a defensive-first mentality, notably failing to register a single goal across his entire 111-game VFL career. He was a key fixture in the Magpies' defensive unit under Bob Rose, playing regularly throughout the early 1970s and lining up in the infamous 1970 Grand Final, where the Collingwood backline was ultimately overwhelmed by Carlton's historic second-half comeback.
After six seasons at Victoria Park, Clifton transferred to Fitzroy for the 1975 season, adding valuable experience to the Lions' defensive stocks. He played two seasons at the Junction Oval as a consistent contributor before retiring from VFL football. Clifton is remembered as an honest, no-nonsense defender who typified the rigid positional structures of 1970s football, serving as a reliable deep defender who rarely ventured past the centre square.
