Recruited from the Box Hill Pioneers in Melbourne's east, Jeff Lawson was a diminutive rover who broke into the Richmond senior side as an 18-year-old late in the 1963 season. Standing just 170cm, he was a sharp ball-winner with a natural instinct for goal, managing to hit the scoreboard frequently during his brief stint at the top level. Although he featured in the Tigers' 1964 Reserves Grand Final team, Lawson found regular senior opportunities difficult to come by and departed Punt Road after just 10 games. He subsequently crossed to the VFA and became a genuine star for Waverley, where he played in the 1965 premiership side and won back-to-back Best and Fairest awards to cement a legacy as a premier goal-kicking midfielder of the competition.
