Bio
Recruited from St Kilda’s local zone via East Brighton and VFA club Sandringham, Jeff Sarau established himself as one of the most lion-hearted ruckmen of the 1970s. Standing at just 191cm, he was often undersized against the era's giants but compensated with a prodigious leap, immense upper-body strength, and a combative, aggression-fuelled playstyle that endeared him to the Moorabbin faithful. Known as "Pup," he thrived on the physical contest and the responsibility of the number one ruck role, ultimately winning two Best and Fairest awards in 1975 and 1977 and earning selection for Victoria.
Despite his durability and long service as club vice-captain, Sarau’s time at St Kilda ended in acrimony when he was stripped of the leadership role prior to the 1984 season. The mishandled situation prompted a shock transfer to the SANFL, where he immediately proved his worth by winning the Best and Fairest with West Torrens in his debut year. He eventually returned to Victoria to captain-coach Frankston in the VFA, but remains best remembered as a St Kilda Hall of Fame inductee who gave no quarter over more than a decade of senior football.
